    Art Gallery

Subcontinent is a Mumbai-based art gallery committed to expanding the canon of South Asian art by showcasing artists and legacies that challenge received narratives or are peripheral to dominant histories. Founded by Dhwani Gudka and Keshav Mahendru, Subcontinent is a space of inquiry, storytelling, and cross-generational dialogue, where overlooked voices are brought into public view with care and conviction. Recent projects include exhibitions on Haku Shah, Jangarh Singh Shyam, Hemali Vadalia, V R Patel, Anjana Mehra, and Jyoti Bhatt.

Subcontinent is located in Mumbai’s historic Fort precinct.

  • The Founders

Dhwani Gudka, a Fulbright-Nehru scholar, with degrees in Museum Studies and Art History from NYU, has contributed to significant exhibitions at major museums in New York and Mumbai - the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the CSMVS. Prior to her time in the States, Dhwani was a South Asian art specialist at Saffronart and Christies, both leading auction houses in India, where she was instrumental in evaluating and securing historic private collections that went on to make record-breaking auction results. Her consulting practice at Special Projects, established in 2020, has worked with artist archives, collectors, foundations and museums, including managing one of the most important private holdings of modern and contemporary South Asian art.

Keshav Mahendru, a Duke University graduate, established an art advisory firm that has worked with leading galleries, museums, private collectors and corporations. He has been instrumental in shaping art collections and engagement strategies for institutions. His deep understanding of the art ecosystem and his ability to bridge commercial and institutional worlds have positioned him as a key player in India’s contemporary art scene. Prior to striking out on his own, Keshav worked at an auction house in New York.
