Biography

Jeram Patel (1930-2016) was a pioneering Indian abstractionist and a founding member of Group 1890, the influential artists’ collective that helped reshape modern Indian art in the 1960s. Born in Sojitra, Gujarat, he studied at the Sir J. J. School of Art in Mumbai and later in London, before returning to India to teach at the Faculty of Fine Arts, Baroda, where he eventually became dean.

Patel is best known for his radical experiments with material and process, especially his use of the blowtorch on wood. Adapting a technique he encountered in Japan, he scorched, engraved, and excavated plywood surfaces, often puncturing them with nails or metal, to create works that balanced destruction and creation, violence and transcendence.

Along with his burnt-wood sculptures and reliefs, Patel produced powerful abstract drawings and paintings in dense black ink, marked by thick strokes, layered forms, and an almost sculptural sense of space. His early work showed traces of figuration, but he soon moved decisively toward non-figurative art, developing a stark, monochromatic visual language centred on black, white, and the raw texture of wood.

Often described as a “lone wolf,” Patel maintained a quiet, introspective practice while remaining a key figure in the Baroda School and Indian modernism. His work has been exhibited widely in India and internationally, including at the Kiran Nadar Museum of Art and Tate London. He received multiple National Awards from the Lalit Kala Akademi as well as the Ravishankar Raval Award.
